It’s a relatively easy task to setup PHP hosting and open it up to the public, getting the most out of your platform is however an entirely different proposition and one that can make a 100 fold difference to the speed of your website. A complex PHP site might be able to generate pages at a rate of 3 to 4 pages a second, an optimised site will often generate as many as 200-300 pages per second.

WP-SuperCache [Wordpress only]

Our platforms supports WP-Supercache and will enable you to gain a huge speed advantage when your site is being access anonymously. This is a free Wordpress plugin which you can download and install on any Wordpress based site.

XCache

This is an object and code cache which will have a dramatic effect on your site keeping frequently used components in memory. Typically we provide 64Mb of program cache and 5Mb of variable cache as this covers many complex PHP applications. Note that this will improve the speed of most PHP applications, but it will have an increased effect on applications that specifically support XCache, for example Wordpress or SMF.

Features

All requests are passed through a single LIGHTTPD instance and then handled by static FCGI processors located on secondary machines. You can have a number of FCGI back-end machines and each process can have an optional XCache setup. With this configuration it is possible to setup a PHP site which can handle thousands of requests per second.

Pricing options

If you are looking to host a relatively low volume / low hit rate website consider looking at our standard hosting service. It’s much more cost effective and may well do the job you want. Although it is referred to as Wordpress Hosting, it can facilitate most PHP based applications.

Linux.co.uk takes up 312M of space, uses around 20G of transfer per month and runs on two 4-thread instances both with XCache backup. As a result, performance on the front page is between 300 and 350 pages per second.

  • Storage + 1 = £10
  • Bandwidth +1 = £10

Total cost of £130 per month.
(for ~ 260 static pages and ~ 9000 document pages at between 300 and 350 pages per second)
